Corey Dillon ran for two touchdowns, including one with 4:07 to
go in the third quarter, to rally number 21 Washington to a
21-10 victory over USC in a Pac-10 contest.
The Huskies (6-2, 5-1 Pac-10) were trailing 10-9 when Dillon, who rushed for 128 yards on a school-record 37 carries, went over from the 1. The score gave Washington its first lead since a John Wales 25-yard field goal made it 3-0 at 10:55 of the first period.
"Their defense was basically trying to stop the run against us," said Dillon. "I was just running the ball. I just go out there and take care of business."
It was the third straight win for the Huskies, who shutout USC in the second half.
Dillon, who rushed for a career-high 259 yards and three first-half touchdowns in last week's victory over Oregon, scored his second touchdown on a three-yard run with just over nine minutes remaining.
Dillon leads the team with 1,035 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns. The junior becomes just the eighth player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards.
"He's a big powerful back, one of the best backs I've played against," said USC defensive tackle Matt Keneley. "You try to hit him high and get help from others on the tackle. Even when you hit him he's going to fall forward."
Washington won in Los Angeles for the first time since a 14-3 victory in 1991. USC still leads the all-time series, 41-24-4, and is 6-4-1 in their last 11 games.
Lambright: "We controlled the game in the second half," said Washington coach Jim Lambright. "It is always special winning down here at the Coliseum."
Sammy Knight set up the Trojans only touchdown when he intercepted a Brock Huard pass at the Washington 35 late in the first period. Three plays later Brad Otton, who completed 13-of-29 passes for 138 yards, hit Rodney Sermons on a 15-yard touchdown to give Southern California (6-3, 3-3) a 7-3 lead 39 seconds into the second quarter. Adam Abrams connected on a 27-yard field goal at 6:27 and USC had a 10-3 halftime lead.
Huard pulled the Huskies within one when he found Jerome Pathon on a post pattern for a 17-yard touchdown at 9:05 of the third period.
"Our offense was overwhelmed," said USC Coach John Robinson. "We couldn't function they were coming on every down. Our defense gave us a chance and played a outstanding game. Our defense just couldn't hold up forever."
