UCLA 52, Washington 28

LOS ANGELES -- Skip Hicks scored four touchdowns, three on the ground and one through the air, to propel the ninth-ranked UCLA Bruins to a 52-28 pounding of the 13th-ranked Washington Huskies at the Rose Bowl. Hicks is now the Pac-10's all-time single season touchdown leader with 24. The Bruins have won eight straight and are 6-1 in conference. Washington dropped its second in a row, falling to 5-2 in the Pac-10.

Hicks rushed for 147 yards on 25 carries. His 24 TDs this year, surpassed the mark held by Washington's Corey Dillon and Marcus Allen of USC at 23. Hicks also has 53 career scores, which ties him with USC's Charles White for the all-time Pac-10 mark.

The Huskies scored the only touchdown of the first quarter when Maurice Shaw sprinted in from 47 yards out just four minutes into the game.

UCLA tied the contest on the first play of the second quarter, as Hicks found paydirt from two yards out. Washington regained the lead on another long run, with Jason Harris romping 55 yards to make it a 14-7 game with 11:58 remaining in the half. UCLA came back again on its next possession, as Cade McNown connected with Jim McElroy on a 47-yard bomb to tie the game.

The Huskies came right back. On their next possession, Brock Huard found Ja'Warren for a 28-yard scoring strike, and Washington jumped ahead again, 20-14.

The Bruins would score two touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the half to take a 28-20 lead into the locker room. McNown hit Hicks on a little flare pattern and he scampered down the right sideline to complete a 67-yard scoring play. McNown, not known for his running ability, went in from 11 yards out just 20 seconds before intermission.

UCLA iced the game with 10 third-quarter points. Chris Sailer nailed a 37-yard field goal with 8:24 left in the quarter to give the Bruins a 31-20 advantage. Hicks rambled 36 yards with 1:30 remaining, making it an 18-point contest.

The Bruins added two more TDs in the final quarter. McNown hit on his third long scoring pass of the game, this one 60 yards to Dan Farmer, just 33 seconds into the quarter. Hicks' final score came five minutes later. His eight-yard run made it 52-20.

Huard dove in from two yards out, as Washington drove down the field on its next possession, to account for the final margin.

McNown hit on 16 of his 23 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns.
