Huskies Fall to Iowa in Sun Bowl, 38-18

Congratulations to Dave Finley, winner of our "Guess the Sun Bowl Score" Contest!
Dave's guess of 34-20, Hawkeyes, was only six points off the actual score of 38-18.

Things looked promising at first in El Paso, with the Dawg defense stuffing Iowa's running game on three straight plays. However, a quick Husky fumble on the punt return, followed by a 58-yard TD run on Iowa's first play put the Hawkeyes up 7-0 early. Things got worse quickly when the Dawgs fumbled the ball once again on their first offensive play of the game, leading to a 49-yard Iowa field goal.

The Dawgs fumbled the ball once again on the kickoff return, but a quick move by Quesada saved the day as he pulled the fumble in and the Huskies maintained possession. The Dawgs could not, however, make a first down on the drive, and had to punt the ball to Iowa.

The Husky defense stopped Iowa on their next drive, and the ball came back to the Dawgs. The offense seemed to come alive for a while, but several dropped Huard passes led to another Husky punt. However, excellent punting and special teams pinned Iowa within their five, and the Hawkeyes couldn't convert.

The Dawg's woes continued at the beginning of the second quarter, as a bad snap on a punt attempt sailed over Prince's head and out of the endzone for a Hawkeye safety. Milloe attempted to jump-started the Huskies two plays later, picking off an errant Matt Sherman pass, but once again the Dawgs could not move the ball down the field. Another Hawkeye fieldgoal followed by another Husky fumble soon followed, setting up yet another Hawkeye fieldgoal. The first half was wrapped up with the Hawkeye's fourth fieldgoal of the game.

The second half started off with the Dawgs going three-and-out on offense, and being forced to punt to Iowa, who promptly scored another field goal -- this one from 50 yards out.

Down 24-0, Jim Lambright decided to try his luck with Fortney at QB. Fortney moved the team down the field in short spurts, leading to a 4th and 5 situation. With nothing to lose, the Dawgs went for it and connected with a long TD pass for their first score of the game. The two point conversion failed, and the Huskies trailed 24-6. Iowa responded seconds later, however, breaking loose on its first play for a long run down the field to set up a 6-yard TD run. After the Huskies once again were forced to punt, the third quarter ended with Iowa marching down the field to Washington's three-yard line.

Iowa capitalized on its field position, scoring once again three seconds into the final quarter, to go up 38-6. The Huskies then replaced Fortney with Huard at QB, and the Huskies put together an impressive drive leading to a TD pass. The 2-point conversion once again failed, and the Dawgs trailed 38-12.

The Huskies stopped the Hawkeyes on their next drive, stopping Iowa's streak of six straight scoring drives. Iowa pinned the Huskies deep on the punt, however, at the Dawg 2-yard line. The Huskies went nowhere on their next possession, going for it on 4th and a foot and losing yardage, turning the ball over on downs to Iowa at the Huskies' own 3 yard line. With the ball, the Hawkeyes tried the halfback option, but ended up throwing the ball to the Huskies in the endzone, and the Dawgs took over. Putting together an impressing drive, the Dawgs capped off the game with a Huard-Conwell TD pass to draw the score to 38-12. Once again, the 2-point conversion failed, this time as the snap was fumbled.
