Postgame Notes and Player and Coach Quotes:

Postgame Notes

Washington senior tailback Jason Harris started the first game of his career today.

Washington quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo ran for a pair of scores today to become only the fourth Husky quarterback since 1991 to rush for five touchdowns or more in a season. Mark Brunell tops the list with 10 rushing TDs in 1990.

This week Washingtons student newspaper, The Daily, held a nicknamed contest for Washington HB/PK Joe Jarzynka. Jarzynka had been dubbed "Joe the Toe" by some members of the media after he made his Husky kicking debut last week. The winning entry, selected by Jarzynka from a pool of submissions, was "I Got My Mo Joe Working" Jarzynka.

Husky punt returner Joe Jarzynkas 91-yard return of a Nick Harris punt in the second quarter was the third longest in Husky history, and the first Washington punt returned for a touchdown since Dave Janoskis 67-yard touchdown return at Arizona State in 1996.

Washington punt returner Joe Jarzynkas 91-yard return for a touchdown today, when combined with Husky cornerback Toure Butlers 98-yard return of a BYU kickoff on September 19th, gives the Huskies their first season with both a punt and a kickoff return for a TD since Dave Janoski scored on an ASU punt and Jerome Pathon brought back a Colorado kickoff for a TD in 1996. 1998 becomes only the 13th season in Washingtons 109 year history in which the Huskies have returned both a punt and kickoff for a touchdown.

Husky quarterback Marques Tuiasosopos 39-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was Washingtons longest TD rush of the year. The previous long was held by fullback Pat Conniff, who scored from 16 yards out in a Husky victory at Arizona State.

Cal linebacker Sekou Sanyika, who entered the game leading the Pac-10 in tackles for loss, continued his hot streak today with a 8-yard sack in the third quarter. He has now had at least one tackle behind the line of scrimmage in every game this season and in 15 of Cals last 17 games dating back to the beginning of the 1997 season. With 4 tackles for loss (6 tackles overall) for 33 yards, the Cal junior LB now has 17 tackles behind the line for 95 yards. He finished the game with two sacks.

Washington had 13 sacks today tie a week-old school record, and raise its Pac-10 leading total to 38. Last season the Huskies had 40 sacks during the entire season.

Washington sophomore quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo tied a career high with 15 pass completions today. His also totaled 15 vs. Oregon in 1997.

Husky punt returner Joe Jarzynka returned seven California punts for 166 yards, setting a new Washington record for punt return yards in a single game. Jarzynka single-handedly broke the 49-year old Washington team record for punt return yards in a single game. The former record of 154 was set vs. Utah in 1949.

The Huskies defense limited Cal to only 5 net yards rushing, the lowest output by a UW opponent this season.

Washington returner Joe Jarzynka amassed 166 punt return yards, upping his season total to 323. This total currently ranks as the fourth-highest season total in Husky history. Beno Bryant tops the list with 560 return yards in 1990.

With a 21-13 victory today, Washington extends its winning streak versus Cal to 16 games. The last time the Bears beat the Huskies was in 1976, when Cal won 7-0 in Seattle.

Postgame Quotes

Washington head coach Jim Lambright

General Remarks: "I was taught in coaching that you can win games by winning two of the three phases constantly through a ballgame and we pretty much did that today. I was really pleased with the special teams. The punt return and the punt game today was so good for us. You look at the productivity in the second half which comes down to a lot of really good defense and again the kicking game. The snap that went over the punters head was a miss-communication from the sideline to out on the field and that never would have happened if we on the sideline hadn't confused him. It was something Scott Ask wasn't responsible for, we hurried him out on the field.

"The fourth down stand by the defense certainly was the huge momentum gainer at the end of the game. With speed and players getting better, as a young football team, we're making some real nice strides. With all of the penalties we've got a lot of work to do with discipline. So much of what happened out there is just controlling emotions. We were very emotionally right to start this game. There's nothing wrong with the way this football team gets ready to play as far as high emotion, then we have to make sure we control it so we don't hurt ourselves."

The On-Side Kick: "We had taken a look at Cal's kickoff returns and we had seen there was a hole were we could pooch an on-side kick. When we kicked off the first time in the game we watched and saw that it was there. Once we had the momentum from the original score in the game, Jim Skurski hit a perfect pooch kick. Your rolling dice just like you are when your making any offensive or defensive call when you feel that you have a tool that you can use. What's great is to have a kicker that kicks it so well. He gave the coaches the greatest confidence in the world all week as we practiced it."

On Joe Jarzynka and the Kicking Game: "It was great watching him score but it was even better watching him catch his breath and se if he could actually kick the extra point afterwards while he's standing there panting over the holder. He adds so much and does so much for us. I think this punt return team has grown and grown and they now know how to compliment Joe's skill."

On the Offensive Struggles: "There were some dropped balls that we shouldn't of had, some misreads and we need to be able to move the ball on the ground. We need to come up with better answers to do that."

On the Return of Brock Huard: "If he is ready he will start for us, for sure. The things we've done with the offense will compliment Brock also. We are in a situation were we have two really good quarterbacks and I get a chance to highlight both of them."

Husky Players Quotes

Lester Towns

On the goal line stand (4th down): "I didnt see exactly what happened, but one of the down linemen fired off and knocked the center back into the quarterback, whoever it was got a good jump. I thought they were going to do a quarterback sneak so I dove over the pile there and saw the ball on the ground."

On the goal line stand (3rd down): "The whole time Im thinking quarterback sneak, after what we went through in the Arizona game. So I stepped up in there and I just jumped up there and went over the top and I saw the fullback coming and Im in the air already. He just ran into the pile, I almost got in there, but we did a good job of helping everyone out and holding him down so he couldnt slip over the top."

On the progress of the defense: "Coach Lambright changed a lot of things in our work ethic. Weve been going against the one offense a lot more and that makes us be more aggressive in practice. The scout team has been giving us a lot of good looks, so were not out there just going through the motions, were out making plays."

Ryan Fleming

On the last play of the game: "Four or five guys came up and just nailed me. I was laying on the ground and they were pulling my face mask and I got ear-holed too. It didnt feel to good but we won the game so thats what counts."

On the reasoning behind the abuse: "Guys will take any shot they can to get a lick on the punter. At the end of the game when they know they are going to lose, they had it in for me."

On snap over his head: "Thats the first time thats ever happened. I just turned around to run and I thought I had enough time to get it off but the ball spun around, so I just had to get it off right there and it turned out pretty good."

Brock Huard

On coming back next week: "Ill be back tomorrow, I was about 90 percent today, had I got any reps this week, I probably could have played. I was talking to Pat Coniff, another guy thats been banged up and will be back this week and we have a taste of the competition, and you miss it; You miss it and you want that taste back a little more it give you and idea of what your missing."

On doubts about decision to stay at UW given injuries: "Absolutely not, I made a decision and it was the absolutely right decision and Im not looking at that at all . It makes you thankful for the opportunity you get to compete each Saturday. I makes you look at it and be even more thankful to give back, and certainly this week Ill be even more thankful to give back when I start competing again."

Reggie Davis

On the strong punting game and returning: "Its helping out a lot. Ryan Fleming is really getting off some boots and pinning them down there deep and making it a lot easier for the defense and the offense better field position. We appreciate Ryan a lot."

On the confidence of winning the past couple: "With every win you get more confidence. Its a lot easier to learn from a win than from a loss so we got a lot of things we need to work on, but it feels so much better to do that after a win."

On penalties: "Thats something we need to work on, keeping our cool. Sometimes guys will try to bait you into something like that and they always tell you the first guy never gets caught, so you have to hold your cool and save it for another time."

Aaron Dalan

On the win: "If you can come out of a game like this with a win and learn from it, thats definitely what we have to do, then thats great."

On dealing with the defensive line: "They were big, they were good and they were moving a lot. The key to the first quarter was just holding onto guys and guys hitting their holes well. We lost the momentum and got ourselves into trouble with a few penalties and few lost yardage plays, things kinda stalled out and we will see exactly what happened on film."

California head coach Tom Holmoe

General Remarks: "Our defense played horribly on the first series. (Washington) executed an unbelievable kickoff. I thought he shanked it. It was a perfect kick and it was caught in stride. That shell shocked us a little bit and kept us off balance. That first quarter was tough. We have got to come out faster. We needed to score on the interception because our offense could not score. Obviously Washington was very tough on us up front. When we get the ball that close to the endzone we have got to score. That was the third time this year we have had the ball close and did not complete the drive. We have to will it in. It is a matter of will. Washington had an unbelievable amount of sacks. In my opinion the most discouraging part of the game was special teams. We failed ourselves on that."

On Joe Jarzynka: "Id like to give credit to Joe Jarzynka. As hard as it was to watch, he gave a tremendous performance. And I did shake his hand after the game. He is a courageous and passionate football player."

On the Blitz: "Washington was showing the blitz a lot. We were trying to throw shorter passes. We went into the four receiver set and had some success with that at the end of the first half. We did not want to come out and have them dictate the game to us that way. They made some changes at half time and we did not want to strictly come out in that set."

On Marques Tuiasosopo: "We prepared for Tuiasosopo all week. The tough thing was preparing for the option or the draw. I do not want to take anything away from Huard. His strength is to sit back in the pocket. Tuiasosopos skills are different. Marques is a very good quarterback and there were a few times we didnt cover him."

California Player Quotes

Justin Vedder, QB

On the 13 sacks: "I am going to get hit, its my job. I am getting up off the ground after every play, that has to say something about my character. If you get knocked down you just have to get back up. We had the right protections called, but a lot of the time they just brought more players then we could block."

On the lack of a running game: "A lack of running game attributed to the sacks. The rushing yards are a bit deceiving because of the 13 sacks. We probably lost over 100 yards in sacks alone. There are definitely some things that we have to work on."

On fumbled snap on the goal line: "Caleb (Brown) and I did not get the snap. I do not know whose fault it is, but you can guarantee that I will take the blame for it. We had the right snap count. I think he got off-balance on his snap and I did not come up with the ball."

John Welbourn, OT

On lack of protection: "We were playing very solid this season. When you have a game like this one, you want to come out next week and refocus. We have to go back to the drawing board and find out if its physical, mental or a numbers break down. We will find out when we watch the films tomorrow.

On offensive line injuries: "Injuries have taken a toll this season. I am not going to say that that is the main reason however. I think that I have to go out and play harder and rally my team."

On how to stop the blitz: "The way that you stop the blitz is to burn the defense with a draw up the middle, or a deep pass. You are looking for something to make them play tentative and back up on their heels."

Albert Dorsey, ILB

On Tuiasosopos TD run: "We practiced all week against the quarterback draw. At that time we thought it was a drop back pass. We turned our backs, and next thing we know he had scored."

On punt coverage: "There was a lot of missed tackles today. We have to improve that if we want to win."
