Robert Nycz's 38-yard field goal with two seconds left lifted number 20 Arizona State to a wild 45-42 victory over Washington in the season and Pac-10 Conference opener for both schools.

Corey Dillon lifted Washington into a 42-42 tie on an eight-yard touchdown run with 5:13 remaining. A shanked 19-yard punt by Geoff Prince gave Arizona State the ball at its own 37 with 56 seconds remaining. On the first play from scrimmage, Jake Plummer threw a 21-yard pass to Lenzi Jackson to move the ball to the Washington 42.

Plummer threw a five-yard pass to Michael Martin and the two hooked up again for an 11-yard gain to the Huskies' 26. Martin ran for five yards to put the ball at the 21. Arizona State then called timeout, but the Huskies called timeout to hex Nycz, who calmly drilled the 38-yard field goal for the winning points.

Plummer completed 16-of-30 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns for Arizona State, which marched 42 yards on five plays on the game-winning drive. Martin added 92 yards on 20 carries.

Brock Huard, replacing an ineffective Shane Fortney at quarterback for Washington, was 6-for-11 for 143 yards and one touchdown. Fortney was 8-of-17 for 96 yards and one touchdown.

Arizona State had taken a 42-21 lead with 12:01 to play on a one-yard plunge by Steven Bush, but the Huskies rattled off 21 points in a span of 3:47 as Huard scrambled in from 10 yards out and threw a 67-yard touchdown pass to Jason Harris before Dillon's eight-yard jaunt.
